Trollinger, Lauren

Lauren Trollinger
Aerospace Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

For my first year in the RISE program, I will be conducting research under Dr. Alison Flatau in the SMART Materials Lab on campus. I began my research last year, and will continue that research through a new project in the lab in order to complete my RISE requirement.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

My second year in the RISE program will consist of the Service component--I will mentor middle- and high-school students in the nearby area through programs like GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science) of PG County, the LEAD Mentorship program with Montgomery County high school students, on-campus events like Maryland Day, and campus organizations that have tutoring programs like Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Gamma Tau.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I am an active member and one of this year’s team captains for the Women’s Club Volleyball team; the Vice President of Alpha Omega Epsilon, the Engineering Sorority; a founding member of the string quartet “Serendipitous Strings”; a member of the University’s chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics; and a member of UMD’s Human-Powered Helicopter team, Gamera.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

This past summer I interned with Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation in Stratford, Connecticut, and as part of the internship I designed, built, and flew a remote-controlled helicopter to accomplish a specific task. Since my team won first place in the competition, each team member received a 30-minute flight lesson in an S-300 helicopter. It was a very rewarding, team-oriented, and practical experience, and my favorite engineering experience I have had so far!
