Rafael Setra
Mathematics and Electrical Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

During my first year I have selected Research as my area of interest. I plan to go into graduate school, and research experience is almost mandatory if I wish to succeed. I wanted to obtain as much experience as soon as I could; I decided to not stall and take every opportunity I can.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

During my second year I will select Service as my area of interest. I enjoy helping others such as through my position as an Undergraduate Teaching Fellow. But I would like to help in other ways as well, and I would like to help more than just engineering students. I believe that RISE can help me accomplish this in my second year.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I am an Undergraduate Teaching fellow for an electric circuits course. I am also a tutor of AP Calculus at Northwestern High School. I enjoy teaching and helping others, and I plan to continue these two activities. I would also like to become an ambassador for the A. James Clark School.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

This summer I was a part of the Training and Research Experiences in Nonlinear Dynamics (TREND) program at the University of Maryland. There I worked with Dr.Rajarshi Roy and Dr.Thomas Murphy on phase modulating a laser with chaotic signals in order to suppress scattering. I enjoyed the program; it was an experience that helped me decide to go to graduate school and continue similar work.
