Christine Sauerbrunn
Mechanical Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

As my first area of focus this year in the RISE program, I am participating in research at the Center for Risk and Reliability. The research I help with investigates the fracture mechanics and probabilistic failure methods of aluminum under different loading and environmental conditions.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

For my second year in the RISE program, I will participate in either the instruction or entrepreneurship component. As a Math Success Coach, I enjoy tutoring students in Calculus II, and the instruction area of RISE would allow me to help students in a different subject. I am also interested in gaining a different set of skills through learning more about how engineering is related to entrepreneurship and business.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

As I mentioned, I am a Math Success Coach in which I attend class lectures and hold a group discussion section once a week for students. I am also in the professional engineering sorority, Alpha Omega Epsilon, which has given me opportunities to meet classmates, network with companies, and grow as a woman in engineering. In addition, I am a member of the Mechanical Engineering Honor Society (Pi Tau Sigma), American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and Society of Women Engineer.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

As a summer intern at the Center for Composite Materials at the University of Delaware, I got a chance to work on two military projects that looked to mitigate injuries that soldiers commonly encountered during active duty. On these projects, I not only was able to help in designing the prototypes, but also manufacturing, testing, and optimizing them. Seeing the entirety of the project, I think, was the most interesting part about working as an engineering intern.
