Pohida, Katherine

Katherine Pohida
Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

I chose instruction for my first year because I enjoy mentoring and educating others in subjects that I have learned. I think it is great practice for me to test my knowledge while also helping students outside of the classroom.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

The second year I want to do research. I have not had a chance to do research for a professor but would like to get involved. I think research benefits students by preparing them for graduate school while also sparking a greater interest in their major and future career. I would like to get involved in a bio related lab.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I am involved in the ChemE car team that is part of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) society. We build a car powered by homemade chemical reactions. I am also Secretary of the AIChE chapter here at UMD. I am also a mentor for the SEEDS program sponsored by UMD. I am also tutor for this same program. I am involved in the Catholic Student Association and its service activities. I am also part of Pre-Med Society.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

ChemE Car has been a great engineering experience. I have enjoyed applying what I have learned about chemical reaction and batteries to a car that involves other types of engineering such as electrical and mechanical. We also get to go on trips to different competitions around the United States.
