Kau, Jonathan

Jonathan Kau
Electrical and Computer Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

I chose Research as my first area of interest because it poses a unique opportunity that I have never been exposed to. My involvement with the Department of Psychology in Shackman Lab has been to use my software engineering abilities to help gather data on anxiety disorders. The chance to develop a mobile application that could allow us to better the lives of those with these disorders is definitely meaningful.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

Entrepreneurship will be my second RISE area because I believe groundbreaking products are developed through the combination of technical and business-related abilities. While the Computer Engineering major at UMD develops strong technical skills, I want to build upon them to solve real-world problems.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

When I’m not studying or working on some of my own software development projects, I can usually be found on the tennis courts as Secretary of Maryland Club Tennis. I am involved with the QUEST Honors program as well as numerous other clubs such as the Mobile App Development Club and Terrapin Hackers. I’ve attended two hackathons thus far and hope to spend many more weekends coding at these events!

What is your cool engineering experience?:

Developing my first Android application, TennisStats, has been the coolest engineering experience for me thus far. Being able to publish a completed product on the Play Store and seeing real users appreciate and review the app has been incredibly rewarding.
