Raquel Hakes
Fire Protection Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

I am working on research for my first year because one of my professors is looking at wild fire spread, which particularly interests me, as I am originally from Arizona and have relatives who have been displaced by wildfires.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

For my second year, I am interested in pursuing instruction, because I enjoy teaching and would like to work more closely with students as they take classes that I have enjoyed.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I am involved in several extracurricular activities, but one of my major involvements is with the Argentine Tango Club on campus, of which I am vice president. I am also part of the Gemstone Honors Program, researching green roof retrofits.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

This past summer I ran fire demonstrations for middle and high school students visiting the university. The fire demos were really great because they both taught me more about my field, as well as got other students excited about fire and engineering.
