Christopher Gusty
Major:
Mechanical Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

My RISE area of interest for the first year is Research. I wanted to get involved in research as soon as possible so that I could work on many different projects during my time at Maryland. I want to expose myself to as many areas of engineering as possible while I have the chance.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

My RISE area of interest for the second year is entrepreneurship. I am fascinated by entrepreneurship and I know that I want to pursue a career in entrepreneurship at some time. With RISE, I will gain valuable knowledge and experience in regards to what it takes to start a company and how to formulate an idea into a successful product or service.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I am a tutor for the Math Success program at Maryland. I am also a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. In my free time I play intramural basketball and intramural volleyball.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

I am currently working on a research project where my team is designing and prototyping an electronic travel aid for the blind. This product uses different sensors to detect obstacles in front of a person that a traditional white cane cannot. These obstacles include overhanging and moving objects. This research project is cool because I get to use my engineering knowledge to help people with disabilities. My team’s work will have a positive social impact.
