April Claus
Aerospace Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

I’m focusing on research during my first year in the RISE program. I have always wanted to become more involved in the research on campus, but I just never found time to look into it. My participation in the RISE program gave me the push I needed to follow through on this task.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

I plan to focus on service during my second year in the RISE program. I have been involved in the on-campus service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, since freshman year. I have always been interested in providing service and helping others; I will become even more involved in this through RISE.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I am the Junior Class liaison for the UMD chapter of AIAA, as well the secretary on the SWE executive board. I am also a member of the National Service Fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, though I went inactive this year due to an increase in academic requirements.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

I am currently participating in a research project at the Space Systems Lab. I am on a team within the Human Factors Division that works on space suit design. My team and I are designing and constructing several space suit analogues; the specific task that my partner and I were given is to re-design and construct the backpack that attaches to the space suit. I love being able to apply what I’ve learned over the last few years to an actual hands-on project, especially when the project is directly related to space exploration.
