Maria Coelho
Civil Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

My first area of interest is Instruction. I chose this area because I believe I have a true vocation for teaching and I really enjoy doing it. I get incredible joy in seeing the difference I can make as students gain new insights, become more interested in a subject and learn about themselves. By teaching others I’m also able to consolidate my own knowledge. You will never learn a topic better than when you start to teach it.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

My second area of interest is Research. I chose this area because I’m very interested in expanding my knowledge on my field, defining my own career interests, and exploring research methods. By doing undergraduate research I will also be able to interact with faculty members and learn from their experience.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I’m involved in the Engineers Without Boarders chapter here at the University of Maryland. Among our chapter's projects, I've been involved in a water sanitation project that is working to provide clean drinking water for a rural community in Peru.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

My cool engineering experience was traveling to Peru with Engineers Without Boarders. During this trip, our project team collected information that has enabled us to design a chlorination system to be soon implemented in the community. This experience was very enriching not only professionally but also personally; I was able to interact with community members and share with them my engineering knowledge to help improve their lives.
