Simmons, Noah

Noah Simmons
Major:
Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

For my first year in the RISE Program, I have chosen to focus on research. I did not get an opportunity to conduct research with faculty for my first two years because I transferred from a community college. I am hoping that devoting this year to research will give me the opportunity to determine how it interests me and to make strong connections with the faculty in the CHBE department.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

I will focus on service. I plan to get involved with Engineers Without Borders. I wanted to get involved this semester, but my schedule filled up and I'm not able to fit it in. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to pursue the career that I want, but I remain aware of the plethora of people who lack clean water and shelter. EWB will give me a chance to use my education to make a difference for people who haven't had the same opportunities as me.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

This semester I joined the electronics sub-team on the ChemE car team. I will be an active member of the AICHE this semester as well. In addition to these extra-curricular activities,I will occupy the time that I am not studying or in class by getting involved with the catholic Student Union and training for a half-ironman with my roommate next summer.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

At Carroll Community College I was on a team that used a Raspberry Pi to develop a prototype security system. What I liked about this project was that it was far outside my expertise at the time. It took a lot of work to learn this new technology, but it was worth it in the end. I am hoping that the electronics team with ChemE car will follow a similar vein.
