Jen Landry
Mechanical Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

I will be doing research during my first year. The research project that I just became involved in deals with bio-inspired mechanical engineering. I worked as a project engineer intern on a Construction site this summer, and I am excited to explore a completely different area of study within the engineering field. The project focus is on soft robotics, which is a topic that I have always wanted to learn more about, and now have the opportunity to do so.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

I would like to focus on service during my second year. I feel so fortunate to have the opportunities that I do through my education, and I am passionate about giving back to a community that has given me so much. In addition to working on a service project here at the university, I would also be very interested in reaching out to some of the lower income neighborhoods surrounding the college park area to see if I can apply my engineering education in a way that will better the lives of people in need of help.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:
  • University of Maryland Dance Team
  • Theta Tau Professional Engineering Fraternity¬†¬†
What is your cool engineering experience?:

As I mentioned earlier, this summer I worked on a construction site as a project engineering intern. This experience was the most hands-on engineering I have ever had, made possible by the convenient location of the central office for engineering on the actual jobsite. I was able to make AutoCAD drawings, and then walk out to the site and guide the field workers in physically creating what I drew on my computer.
