Walsh, John

John Walsh
Civil and Environmental Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

For my first year,I am interested in research. This summer I was an intern at NIST and conducted research on heat exchangers. I enjoyed the methodical approach and technical work and wish to continue conducting research during school year. Since I will be taking the water resources/environmental track of civil engineering, I want to focus on hydrology and environmental-based research so that I can apply my experience to solving environmental issues such as oil spills and floods.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

For my second year, I plan to focus on service. I attended and Engineering Without Borders meeting my freshmen year and have been interested in service ever since. The Compone, Peru project especially captured my attention since they were focusing on improving the water quality there. I want to assist others both in the Maryland community and abroad, and by focusing on service I hope to gain logistics skills as well as the opportunity to share my passion for engineering.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

I was the Construction Manager for the Concrete Canoe Team last year and am now serving as Project Manager. The project encapsulates all facets of civil engineering including concrete mix design, construction and power tools, wastewater management, and scheduling. I came in with no experience and learned more that I ever could have imagined. Working with my teammates to successfully overcome such a complex challenge solidified my interest in civil engineering and inspired to lead the project this year.
