Spencer Grissom
Chemical Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

Research would be my preference for the first year as I am fascinated by the novelty of the science and its innovative application that serve to advance understanding and quality of life. Additional experience in research would serve to expand my breadth of experiences and clarify my career goals and aspirations.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

Instruction would be my preference for the second year as I thoroughly enjoy guiding discussion and helping students come to understand and appreciate the content at hand. I have taken up tutoring positions for years now and have served as a TA for physics before and would welcome the opportunity to continue assisting the community.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

On campus,  I am involved with the Gemstone Honors Program as an undergraduate researcher on Team Lytic as well as various leadership positions for organizing student fraternity dedicated to scholarship, investigation, and service. Finally, I have been involved with NIH and the University of Delaware for various research projects.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

This last summer, I had the opportunity to participate in an REU with the Material Science and Engineering department at the University of Delaware. Here I was able to help guide and develop a project employing photon upconverting nanoparticles to facilitate the degradation of a hydrogel to release a drug. I was able to get hands on experience with organic and inorganic synthesis, optical measurement, rheometry, and electron microscopy.
