Gollob, Samuel

Mechanical Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

For the first year, I will be focusing on Research. I would like to gain the experience of what it is to apply myself to research, so I can have a better idea of what to pursue for my future. If this experience is fulfilling and I decided to continue into graduate school, it will also serve as an important part of my application material.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

I plan on focusing on Instruction. I have had previous experience with instruction and have truly enjoyed it. I like to see the impact of not only helping people with content-related difficulties, but also greater issues. Through instruction, I feel I can help people find something that excites and interests them, and learn to use critical thinking and analytical skills to extrapolate the knowledge they gain. Instruction to me is about strengthening people’s drive to learn and question.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

Research takes up most of my time for extracurricular, with the exception of personal exercise. I have participated in the Solar Decathlon before, though I am no longer in it. This coming semester I hope to also expand my knowledge of the humanities by joining clubs such as the UMD Philosophy Club.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

Firstly, I have been and am still currently working on helping redesign ENES 100. This means I brainstorm ideas about where the course could go and build prototypes that demonstrate the feasibility of these ideas. For the past two months, I have been doing research on creating an airflow sensor with microscale components; I have created a working prototype and have moved on to gathering data and preparing to submit a conference paper.
