Cleary, Alison

Mechanical Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

I have decided to do Research for my first year in the RISE program because I am interested in pursuing a Master's degree in the future. I would like to get a feel for research and possibly have the opportunity to continue working on my project for the next four semesters of my undergraduate experience. I am interested in robotics and biomechanics, and the microbiotics lab at UMD will help me explore my interests.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

I will be doing Instruction for my second year in the RISE program because I have always had the desire to help my peers in understanding concepts I have been able to understand myself. As a Teaching Fellow, I would like to inspire and encourage younger students within engineering while also helping to point them in the right direction for their understanding of a course.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I am involved in Pi Tau Sigma Mechanical Engineering Society, University Honors, Women's Club Lacrosse, SEEDS Mentoring, and Gamma Phi Beta International Sorority.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

My cool engineering experience has been interning at the R&D Department at STX LLC. I was able to involved in the ongoing product design process of sporting goods equipment for a variety of sports. I performed vibrational analysis on field hockey sticks, impact testing on protective equipment, and high speed camera analysis on lacrosse ball motion. I was able to design and implement my own tests in attempts to solve performance problems of equipment I myself use weekly.
