McWilliams, Jessica

Major:
Mechanical Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

I chose research form y first year because of my current involvement in the Micro Robotics Laboratory. I enjoyed working in this lab last year, and now that I have a year of experience I will be able to dive deeper into my project. I enjoy the challenge of research. It enables me to think creatively and learn many skills that I do not acquire in my class.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

I am planning to choose Instruction as my second year activity. I am passionate about helping others and teaching, and I've had the desire to become a TF since before I came to college. I believe that teaching is a great way to gain a better understanding of a subject. I am also considering going into academia in the future, and being a professor may be something that I would really enjoy.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I am involved in the University Jazz Band. I am a member of several engineering organizations including, Tau Beta Pi, Pi Tau Sigma, Alpha Omega Epsilon, ASME, and SWE. In the community, I am a member of a church called Aletheia College Park where I serve on the Greeting team and meet in a smaller "community group" once evening during the week in addition to attending Sunday services regularly.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

This past summer I worked at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory on a hybrid aerial aquatic vehicle. It was capable of operating in the air and underwater, as well as transitioning between the two mediums. I had the opportunity to work on both the software and hardware sides of this innovative project, and it affirmed my love for robotics.
