Pique, Alexander

Major:
Mechanical Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

During my first year I am interested in research. During the end of my spring semester of my sophomore year I began to conduct research into developing a novel system of diagnosing schizophrenia by analyzing retinal signals through electroretinogram(ERG) readings. I wanted to continue my research in order to combat the debilitating illness that affects millions od people worldwide. Also, I am interested in pursuing graduate studies after graduation.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

During my second year I am interested in entrepreneurship. I am interested in working with motivated and creative people to design and prepare a product for market. I am looking to change my perspective on engineering and I think experience with some entrepreneurial opportunities may be my chance to broaden my horizon.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I am currently a member of the Gemstone Honors College Program.I also enjoy hiking and rock climbing.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

For the summer after my sophomore year, I interned at the Stanford Linear Accelerator where I designed parts for attenuating an X-Ray beam that would be used for obtaining images of micro/nano sized biological samples. I also designed a mirror-lens system and its parts for allowing laser interaction with X-Ray beam in order to trigger a reaction within the sample. This internship allowed me to experience the engineering design process.
