Jahn, Kathryn

Major:
Mechanical Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

For my first year, I am focusing on the instruction component of the RISE program. I chose instruction because I have enjoyed helping my peers understand course material for the past two years and have found that by teaching the material to others has increased my understanding of the material.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

I will focus on research for the second year because I believe it will help me apply concepts I have learned throughout my college experience to real world problems. Conducting research will help me learn skills that cannot be taught in a classroom, and I believe it will also help transition into a job after graduation.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I am a part of the Maryland Unmanned Aerial Systems (MUAS) team at the University of Maryland. This team competes in AUVSI's annual UAS competition. I am also a part of the Gemstone program here at UMD. My team, ARM IT, is researching and developing a user interface between virtual reality and unmanned aerial vehicles for payload control purposes.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

In tenth grade, two friends and I built a 15-foot bamboo sailboat for the PBS Build Big Contest.
