Shonkwiler, Sara

Mechanical Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

During my first year in the RISE Program, I am pursuing instruction as a UTF. In my first two years at UMD, I have gotten much more out of engineering classes in which the UTF/TA loved the material and was dedicated to helping students. Last year, I enjoyed instructing and helping students in ENES 100 and ENEE 101. I hope to continue assisting students, as well as, improving my teaching ability.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

During my second year in the RISE Program, I plan to pursue research. I enjoy questioning and testing things and I believe pursuing research will allow me to do this. Additional hands on experience will give me a better understanding of engineering work. I am also going to graduate school. I believe an undergraduate research experience will help me determine if graduate school is a worthwhile experience.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I am group study leader for students taking introductory calculus at UMD and was an engineering UTF for ENES 100 last semester. I am also part of Club Running and enjoy contra dancing at glen echo.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

Creating a CNC Machine that carves out grayscale photographs and 3D images. And building enormous gingerbread houses with a modified recipe for greater structural integrity.
