D'Ascoli, Gerald

D'Ascoli, Gerald
Electrical Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

Instruction. I was leaning towards research, but I was in a perfect position for Instruction as I already had a UTF position. However, with Instruction I hope to learn how to improve my teaching methods and learn how to make complex engineering complex easier to understand.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

Entrepreneurship. My father always told me: "inventors don't make the money from their inventions, the entrepreneurs do". Understanding the business side of engineering is extremely useful and interesting, whether I end up selling my own product or developing a product to be more successful in the market.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:
  • Theta Tau: A Professional Engineering Fraternity
  • Club Wrestling
  • College Park Scholars
  • Virtus
What is your cool engineering experience?:

At Bitcamp 2016 I was on a team of two mechanical engineering students, one computer engineering student, and one computer science student. We designed a high-tech version of rockem-sockem robots, having one robot controlled by motion capture technology and giving a first-person view from the robot with VR technology. That weekend of little sleep was fun, stressful, exciting, and educational as we developed a difficult project in a short time frame in an environment that encouraged creativity and hard work.
