Murphy, Alan

Murphy, Alan
Materials Science Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:
I am interested in research during my first year because I would like to gain more hands-on experience in the lab. This experience is better to have earlier rather than later because it will prepare me for future lab opportunities in senior year and beyond. Now tha I am delving into my specialization area (electronic, optical, and functional materials), it will be extremely useful to be simultaneously learning about these materials in the lab and in my classes.
What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

I am interested in service during my second year because I've always had a passion for encouraging younger students to pursue STEM subjects. In addition, I've tutored for five years, so the service area will allow me to tutor high schoolers and give back to the community during my last year as an undergraduate.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:
Currently, I have no extracurricular activities, but I plan on joining the Hip Hop Orchestra, playing intramural sports, and attending tango/salsa lessons weekly.
What is your cool engineering experience?:

My cool engineering experience was working in Dr. Phaneuf's lab during my freshman year at UMD. I worked with a particular graduate student who earned a lot of recognition for her work with using atomic layer deposition (ALD) to protect museum ceramics. I was honored to assist this fascinating project, and it was useful to gain knowledge about lab procedure, equipment, etc.
