Civil Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

My RISE area of interest for my first year is research – I am still undecided about what I want to do with an undergraduate degree in engineering and I think exposure to research could arm me with the tools to make this decision. I also find research and realizing/synthesizing new ideas and information completely fascinating.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

My RISE area of interest for my second year will probably be instruction. I enjoy working with students in subjects that I have already mastered. I work with the athletics department to tutor some student-athletes and I have had many rewarding experiences through that. Seeing someone finally understanding a challenging concept makes working with them completely worth it.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

As I mentioned above, I am a student-athlete peer tutor for the Athletics Department. I am the legislative secretary of the Student Government Association. I am also involved with peer mentoring freshman, both through the University Honors Program and the Banneker/Key Community Council.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

My coolest engineering experience thus far would definitely be the hovercraft project I completed in ENES100. Even though I’ve been exposed to many different projects and ideas since I took ENES100, finally finishing a semester long project after such a daunting process was awesome. Seeing my team’s hovercraft complete the course successfully after many late nights and failures convinced me that engineering was the best major for me.
