Carney, Rachel

Major:
Civil Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

Service. I have selected service because I would love the opportunity to be an Ambassador for the Clark School of Engineering. The Clark school has served me well for the two years that I have been at UMD and I want to extend my knowledge about the opportunity to students in high school. I am also detail oriented and love planning events so I think this would be a good fit for me.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

Entrepreneurship. I chose entrepreneurship for my second year because I want to learn more about the opportunity and the methodology involved with a startup. I may want to start my own construction or design business in the future. However I want to know more about engineering as I become involved with this program so I want to wait for my senior year for this track.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

My other involvements this coming semester will be tutoring several times a week as well as my job working for Levy Restaurants at Fedex Field. I only work this job once every two weeks or so (when the Redskins have a game), and it is generally on Sundays, so this commitment should not interfere with my participation in RISE.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

My coolest engineering experienced would be the entire internship that I had this summer. This summer I was working in Holtwood, PA at a hydroelectric dam. The project was the instillation of Obermeyer gates, which help to control the water level behind the spillway portion of the dam. The Obermeyer gates are curved steel and they lay atop an inflatable rubber bladder. During my summer there, I saw so many neat things that I would never have the privilege to see if I was not involved in construction. My office was a beautiful river an I looked forward to going to work every day, and is the coolest thing about engineering to me.
