Russell, Kathleen

Civil Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

I am interested in research for my first year of study. Research is one way to expand one's knowledge and gain experience outside of the classroom. The research I plan to work on this year relates to studying the response of a base-isolated structure to highly frequency ground motion, in addition to using an MR damper to reduce the response of the structure.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

I am interested in the area of instruction for my second year. Learning is important, but it takes another level of understanding to be able to explain concepts to someone else. I hope to gain a new perspective on learning and to assist in teh success of other students by working as a TF.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I currently work for the Adventure Program under University Recreation and Wellness as a climbing wall staff member. I am also a student leader at the Catholic Studen tCenter, and enjoy playing intramural sports or pick-up games on the mall.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

My cool engineering experience came this past summer in the form of a trip to Japan. The professor who I began research with last semester received funding to take two graduate students and one undergraduate student to Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan. The purpose of the trip wa to use their earthquake testing equipment to run a set of experiments, as well as to establish a relationship between UMD and Tohoku University.
