Adam Berger

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

In the first year, I will be pursuing the research aspect of the RISE program. Research has always played an integral role in allowing me to understand the world around me. Questioning everything and seeking to improve upon the current state is important to me. Bioengineering research allows me to apply this deeper understanding of the natural world to biomedical applications.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

In the second year, I plan to focus on the entrepreneurship aspect on RISE. I believe that for research to leave the lab and enter the market to improve human health, a strong understanding of entrepreneurship is essential. I know I will enjoy learning a side of research that I am less familiar with but that is crucial in allowing full societal impact.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

Currently, I am a member of the Gemstone Honors Program. In addition, I helped found The Catalyst, an undergraduate journal for bioengineering and biotechnology research at UMD, and currently serve as the Design Chair. In my spare time, I enjoy playing tennis, running, and music.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

One of the coolest engineering experiences that I have had was visiting the Mercedes Benz factory in Germany. Seeing how the cars are made on a production line was neat. What I found intriguing was the workflow between industrial robots doing some of the work and humans doing other parts. Seeing the cars from start to finish as they are built and assembled is one engineering experience that I will never forget, as cars are so often taken for granted.
