Nguyendo, Thien

Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

My first year will be focused on academic service within my department. As a rising junior, I was invited to join the chemical engineering honor society, Omega Chi Epsilon, which runs a review and tutoring service I took advantage of in previous engineering classes. Now that I am part of this organization, I have the opportunity to give back and become a tutor myself. I hope to open someone's eyes in the same way the service has open mine.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

I wish to pursue a line of research for my second year of RISE. I have had a great deal of involvement in doing research under a professor and for good reason.: research is such a unique and fulfilling experience. To be given a perplexing puzzle to solve that rewards the solver with new information no one else knows yet - there is nothing else like it.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I am currently a part of two chemical engineering organizations, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Omega Chi Epsilon Chemical Engineering Honor Society. I like to get involved in a lot of pertaining to the field, such as helping with assignments or attending talks about those who have used their degrees for lots of interesting purposes. On a more lighthearted side, I also enjoy playing tabletop games with the role playing game association and shooting arrows with the archery club.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

I find the coolest thing about engineering is how helpful and supportive engineering majors are when it comes to academics. When engineering classes start to pick up with concepts and assignments becoming very difficult, it is amazing to see how serious and motivated everyone is in taking on the challenge. It can be quite motivating and even somewhat of a lifesaver to have friends who are all there with you to get down to business.
