Christopher Lee
Fire Protection Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

Service. I was recently selected to be a Clark School Ambassador starting in the fall semester. I believe that the Ambassador position and the focus in service for the RISE program will go hand in hand. I will be able to become accustomed to both programs simultaneously and do a lot of good for the UMD community and beyond.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

Research. This past semester I tried my hand in research for the first time by working on a team of Fire Protection sophomores (led by Dr. James Milke) in a project to investigate the effects of dust nuisance sources on beam smoke detectors. This project opened my eyes to the world of research in FPE and left me wanting to work on a new project. Dr. Peter Sunderland has also expressed an interest in working with me in the future.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:
  • ¬†Society of Fire Protection Engineers
  • Honors College- University Honors
  • VIRTUS Living-Learning Community
  • National Society of Collegiate Scholars
  • Primannum Honor Society¬†
What is your cool engineering experience?:

My coolest engineering experience was the research project mentioned above. We were able to develop an experiment that involved us creating a uniform dust cloud that we would introduce into our test environment at a constant rate. We measured the level of light transmittance through the test environment and recorded the levels of light transmittance when the detectors we tested responded with either a fault or a fire signal. Ultimately, we were able to gather some very useful data.
