Nicole McDermott
Civil Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

For my first year I would like to work in the service component. This is because every community is strengthened by its members supporting one another and their endeavors. I think this would be an excellent way to be more involved and contribute to the community.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

During my second year I would like to work with the instruction aspect. I feel that at that point in my education I will be qualified and capable of teaching and assisting others. I have been very fortunate to have caring and helpful professors and teaching assistants in my time here and would like to pass that positive experience on to others.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

For the 2014-15 school year I am a resident assistant in South Campus Commons housing. This year will be my third as a community advocate in the Student Judiciary Committee. I will be serving as the secretary for the Concreate Canoe team, a competition between college chapters of the American Society of Civil Engineers.  Additionally I am involved in the Student Sustainability Committee, a committee of the Student Government.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

When I worked as an intern for the State Highway Administration I was assigned to work with the crew driving steel H support piles on a I-695 bridge reconstruction project. I kept track of the energy that the hammer generated; when the requirements were meet I called we could move to the next pile. Being able to understand what went into the support of a bridge and being responsible for checking that minimums were obtained was very informative and rewarding.
