Khattar, Anish

Computer Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

I am doing research during my first year. I am currently working with Dr. Blankenship in the ECE department on a robot navigation project. I have chosen to do research because I am interested in exploring the area of robotics. Robotics is a relatively new field and a lot of research is being done in the area. I am particularly interested in looking at how robots can make our everyday lives easier and even help us accomplish things that we can't do ourselves.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

My second are of interest is entrepreneurship. I am interested in this area because I will like to start my own technology company one day.  One of the the notable reasons that startups fail are due to lack of inexperience in the business world. I will first to gain some experience by working in the industry and then start thinking about forming my own startup. Through RISE, I will like to work at a startup in the DC area and get a taste of what's it like to work in a startup.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I am part of the Gemstone Honors College, which consists of a 3 year interdisciplinary research project. My team is currently developing an application that will help blind elementary school students to “visualize” mathematic graphs and shapes.  I am also currently working with Dr. Schultheis in the bioengineering department to develop a mobile application. The application will be used by doctors to manage patients with rare dietary diseases and help patients maintain a healthy diet. I have recently joined the Toastmaster's club at UMD, which is an organization that helps members improve public speaking skills. I hope to gain some valuable skills through my involvement in the club.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

The coolest engineering experience I have had so far was building the hovercraft in ENES100. But I hope to experience many more awesome projects through my involvement in the RISE program.
