Dicus, Julie M

Julie Discus
Major:
Fire Protection Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

My focus will be on Research because I was involved in the Fire Protection Sophomore Research Project last year. This year’s project will be an expansion of last year’s so I will be able to offer assistance to the research efforts while helping to mentor the students through the process of conducting research. Not only can I offer suggestions for the team, but I will be able to help conduct the research and witness any new findings.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

My focus will be on Instruction during my second year because I really enjoy helping others learn, especially about Fire Protection Engineering. I often try to help out my department by representing Fire Protection Engineering at information fairs and student visit days to help others learn about the program we offer. I feel that I can use these skills in the classroom to help students with the fire protection courses they are taking and give them a more enjoyable experience.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

As stated above, I volunteer in the Fire Protection department by helping others learn about the program and giving some fire demonstrations. I also will be the President of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers this school year, which involves holding monthly meetings for students and giving them the opportunity to hear from guest speakers that work in the field.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

My cool engineering experience would have to be getting to work on the sophomore research project last year. This opportunity showed me that research is one path I could take with my degree; something I was not sure interested me in the beginning. I enjoyed getting to do hands on work rather than sitting in a class all day long. I also got to work with a few other classmates and meet some of the faculty along the way.
