Xu, Leah

Leah Xu
Computer Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

My first area of interest is research. I am currently conducting research under Dr. Michel Cukier in the Cybersecurity Quantification Laboratory. I am very interested in quantifying and analyzing the data collected from intruders to see what factors will affect their behaviors and develop better solutions to combat cybercrime.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:

I have always wanted to be deeply involved in entrepreneurship since it simultaneously gives you a great breadth and depth of experiences. You have to deep dive into the area you’re trying to innovate, but also learn all the components that go into creating a successful entrepreneurship venture including the engineering and sales sides.

What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I am a brother of the Theta Tau Professional Engineering Fraternity where I am currently the Professional Development Chair. I am very involved in engineering organizations as a member of IEEE and HKN, the IEEE Honors Society. Academically, I am involved with the QUEST Honors program, FLEXUS, and University Honors.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

My first programming class in college (CMSC131) sold me on engineering. This summer I was given the opportunity to develop an end-to-end demo of a wearable enterprise fitness tracking system to motivate my team’s product, Azure Event Hubs, an event ingestion service. It was very cool to watch a dashboard change as pedometer data was collected from a smart watch, knowing how many different pieces there are behind the scenes.
