Christopher Wong
Materials Science and Engineering

What is the RISE area of interest during your first year and why?:

I am interested in the Research component as I have already researched for a semester with Prof. Isabel Lloyd on dental ceramics and would like to build upon the previous semester's work. My long term goal is to pursue a  Ph.D. and an industrial or government  research career, and would like to develop my research skills as soon as possible.

What is the RISE area of interest during your second year and why?:
I am interested in the Instruction component for the second year. I have had many opportunities to informally help my classmates in both classes we were taking concurrently and classes I had previously taken, and feel I would be able to be an aid to students in a more formal instruction position. In addition, instruction will help me learn vital skills in communication and working with others.
What are your involvements and or extracurricular activities?:

I am a didicated pianist, having continued to pursue a piano performance minor at MAryland. I will be performing a work in the spring the University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra and will be preparing for that performance. I am also involved in UMD choruses.

What is your cool engineering experience?:

My cool engineering experience was planning and designing an extension and finishing the basement in our house with my father, who is a structural engineering. Evaluating aesthethics and comfort, material selection, structural integrity, and a budget, it was an exciting and educational experience that produced a space that benefits our family's daily life.
